One world, two pictures

Every island, foe and lantern is drawn twice: once in soft-lit 3D, once as a hand-pixelled 16-bit scene seen from the same angle. Flip between them mid-fight. Your hero, your save and the fight in front of you stay exactly where they were.

Two ways to fight

Choose who carries the lantern

The cat knight mid-swing against a group of foes

4 hearts · close combat

Cat knight

Wide sword swings and more health. Starts with a sword and a returning blade throw, and picks up daggers, a bow and more on the road.

The frog Rainkeeper casting rain magic at a distance

3 hearts · ranged magic

Rainkeeper

Rain magic that strikes from afar. Walking refills your raindrops, so the Rainkeeper fights on the move. Starts with a rain staff and a rain comet.

Streamed, seeded, endless

The islands keep going

Meadows run into violet valleys, terracotta canyons and snowy northern realms. Rivers, roads and bridges carry across every border. Type a world code to walk the same landscape as a friend.

Guardians

Every blow shows where it lands

Each dungeon ends with its own guardian. The outline on the ground is the exact shape of the blow, and it fills up the moment the blow lands. The colour tells you what it does.

The hero sitting by a lantern at night, the vigil open

Lanterns

Rest where the light is

Sit by a lantern to heal and keep a vigil: spend embers on levels, attributes and oaths. Foes never camp near a lantern, so a rest is a real rest. Fall in battle and the lantern remembers the way back, and the rooms you cleared stay cleared.

Pastimes

Thirty seconds of something else

Between fights, fish off a pier, race a paper boat down the rapids or play a village concert. Each pastime is a small one-thumb game with its own music and prizes.

The paper atlas, showing the first ring of islands

The atlas

A paper map that fills in as you walk

Villages, dungeons, caves and bridges appear on the atlas as you find them. Raise the chained bridges by hand to open the next ring of islands.

A recent browser. The 3D picture uses WebGPU (current Chrome, Edge and Safari). Without WebGPU the game opens in pixel art.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. Rainroam is made to be played one-handed in portrait: the stick and the attack buttons sit under your thumb.

What is the pixel art mode?

The same game drawn as a 16-bit isometric picture. Switch between 3D and pixel art in Settings at any moment; nothing is lost.

Does my progress save?

Yes. The game keeps three journeys on your device and saves as you play. Cleared dungeon rooms stay cleared.
